Jalpaiguri district (Pron: dʒɔlpaːiːguɽiː) ((ベンガル語:জলপাইগুড়ি জেলা)) is a district of the Indian state of West Bengal,2. It is situated between 26° 16' and 27° 0' North latitudes and 88° 4' and 89° 53' East longitudes. The district was established in 1869 in British India. The headquarters of the district are in the Indian city of Jalpaiguri, which is also the divisional headquarters of North Bengal and has its special importance in respect of tourism, forest, hills, tea gardens, scenic beauty and commercialization and business. ==Etymology== The name ''Jalpaiguri'' comes from the Bengali word ''jalpai'' meaning "olive" because of the olives which grew in the district and were seen even in the 1900s. The suffix ''guri'' means a place. The name can also be associated with Jalpesh (Shiva), the presiding deity of the entire region.
